What is Lachesis?
Origin and source. Lachesis is prepared from the venom of Lachesis muta, the bushmaster — a large, highly venomous snake of the tropical Americas. In homeopathy the venom is the starting material. The serpent's known physiology — its neurotoxic and haemotoxic effects, its dark discoloration and spreading swelling at the bite — informs the traditional symptom picture of the remedy.
Preparation in homeopathy. As with all homeopathic remedies, the venom undergoes serial dilution and succussion according to pharmacopoeial method. The final preparation is highly diluted; what remains is a remedy defined by its traditional symptom profile in the materia medica rather than by any material dose of venom.
Historical place in homeopathy. Lachesis is one of the great animal-kingdom polycrests, introduced through the provings and clinical work of nineteenth-century homeopaths who studied snake venoms. Mind
Talkative, hurried, suspicious, and jealous; the person unburdens a stream of words yet is mistrustful. There is suppressed anger that erupts; a fear of being controlled or betrayed. Women, especially around menopause, are classically described in this state. This is one of the most distinctive mental pictures in the materia medica. The loquacity is not mere cheerfulness — it is driven, as if the person must speak to relieve an inner pressure, and it often turns to grievances and imagined slights.
Digestive
A sensation of a lump rising in the throat after eating; sour, bitter belching; a dark-coated tongue. Liver region may feel congested and tight; worse after sleep.
Urinary
A traditional consideration in dark, scanty urine with a bearing-down or constricted feeling; the urinary sphere is read within the whole picture.
Extremities
Joints may ache and look discoloured; a tight, bursting pain in the limbs; varicosities. Worse from pressure and after rest.
Modalities
Better: loosening clothes, open air, discharge (menstruation may relieve). Worse: after sleep, warmth, pressure/tightness, left side, alcohol, suppressed discharge.
