What is Cinnabaris?
Origin and source. Cinnabaris is prepared from cinnabar, the naturally occurring red mineral form of mercuric sulphide (vermilion). Historically prized as a pigment and in alchemy, cinnabar is toxic in crude form; in homeopathy it is systematically diluted and succussed so that the finished preparation is a highly diluted remedy defined by its traditional symptom profile, not by any material dose of mercury.
Preparation in homeopathy. As with all homeopathic remedies, cinnabaris undergoes serial dilution and succussion according to pharmacopoeial method. What remains is a remedy characterised by its constitutional and acute profile in the materia medica.
Historical place in homeopathy. Cinnabaris occupies a place among the "syphilitic" or deep mineral remedies in the classical miasmatic framework, sharing features with mercury (mercurius) but with its own emphases โ bone pains, eye inflammation, and the sensation of plugs/constrictions. It is traditionally considered in chronic, deep-seated states with a coppery or destructive tendency, and is distinguished from mercurius solubilis by its more fixed, less salivating, more "plug-like" picture.
Key Characteristics
- Sticking, tearing bone pains โ especially in the long bones, shin, and nose; a deep, boring, "in the bone" quality.
- Severe eye inflammation โ red, painful, photophobic eyes; a traditional leading sphere.
- Sensation of a plug or constriction โ a "stopper" feeling in the throat or urethra; difficult swallowing or passage.
- Coppery skin / destructive tendency โ a traditional syphilitic-type mark: copper-coloured spots, ulceration, gland involvement.
- Nose and bone link โ coryza with bone pain and a tendency to nasal crusting/ulceration.
- Worse at night, from cold, and from rest; the bone pains are classically worse lying down and at night.
- Better from warmth and motion; a restless, must-move quality with the deep pains.
Traditional Symptom Picture
In homeopathic practice, cinnabaris is traditionally considered when a person's symptom pattern includes the themes above. The picture is built system by system:
Head
Deep, boring head pains with a "plug" or congestion feeling; the face may show coppery or unhealthy discolouration in the deep picture.
Eyes
A leading sphere. Severe inflammation โ red, hot, painful, photophobic eyes, with a tendency to ulceration of the cornea in the traditional deep picture. The eye involvement is often out of proportion and persistent.
Nose
Coryza with bone pain; crusting, dryness, and a tendency to ulceration of the nasal septum โ a traditional syphilitic-type feature. The nose "bones" ache.
Throat
Sensation of a plug or stopper; difficult, painful swallowing with a constricted feel. Tonsils may be swollen and unhealthy.
Skin
Coppery, indurated, or ulcerated spots; a traditional "syphilitic" skin marking. Slow-healing, deep lesions are a consideration in the individualised picture.
Mind
Irritable, restless, and anxious with the deep pain; the person is worn by the boring bone ache and the eye distress. Less a constitutional "personality" remedy than a deep, fixed, painful picture, the mental state is one of being harassed by the severity and persistence of the symptoms โ a low, fretful irritability rather than loquacity. Traditional descriptions note a despondency tied to the unrelenting bone pain and a dread of losing sight (with the eye involvement). Sleep is broken by the night-worse pain.
Constitution & temperament
The cinnabaris constitution is the deep, syphilitic-type, bone-and-eye picture โ a person with fixed, boring pains, eye inflammation, and coppery/destructive skin tendencies. There is a slowly progressive, "something is being destroyed" quality to the complaints that distinguishes it from more superficial rheumatics. This is a traditional constitutional sketch used in individualised case-taking, never a label applied to a disease, and never a claim about any specific infection.
Urinary
The "plug" sensation in the urethra โ difficult, painful, interrupted passage โ is a traditional keynote. A consideration within the individualised deep picture.
Digestive
A dry, constricted, unhealthy throat and a sluggish, coated digestive state; the emphasis is more on the upper passages than the bowel.
Liver
A deep, congested hepatic picture with glandular involvement is a traditional consideration within the individualised picture.
Extremities
The bone-pain sphere. Tearing, boring pains in the long bones (shin, femur), wrists, and joints; worse at night and lying down, better from motion and warmth.
Modalities
Better: warmth, motion, gentle rubbing. Worse: night, lying down, cold, rest, the boring bone pain itself.
Every symptom is read as part of an individual's complete picture. Two people with the same diagnosis may receive different remedies.
Conditions Where Practitioners May Consider Cinnabaris
The conditions below are ones where homeopathic practitioners traditionally discuss cinnabaris as one possible remedy among many, selected by the individual's complete symptom picture. Each links to its live condition overview and (where available) its in-depth guide.
Homeopathy individualises; responsible care includes medical diagnosis where indicated.
Common Patient Questions
- "Is cinnabaris the same as mercury?" โ no. Although both share syphilitic-type traits, cinnabaris (mercuric sulphide) has its own fixed picture โ bone pains, eye inflammation, and "plug" sensations โ distinct from mercurius solubilis.
- "Why do my bone pains worsen at night?" โ deep boring bone pains worse at night and lying down are a core cinnabaris keynote, exactly the kind of modality a homeopath records.
- "Is it toxic like the mineral?" โ crude cinnabar is toxic; the homeopathic preparation is highly diluted and succussed, with no material mercury remaining. A qualified homeopath supervises it.
- "How do I know the potency?" โ potency is individualised by the practitioner, not chosen from a fixed chart.
Potencies
Homeopathic preparations use potency scales indicating dilution and succussion:
- 6C / 30C โ lower Centesimal potencies, traditionally for milder or more superficial patterns.
- 200C โ a higher potency, traditionally for deeper or constitutionally-matched cases.
- 1M โ a high potency used occasionally in individualised practice.
- LM โ a gentle, sequential potency format for sensitive individuals.
Potency is individualised โ chosen by the practitioner from your constitution and response. We do not advise self-selection of potency, especially with deep mineral remedies.
Dosage
Homeopathic dosage varies by individual: constitution, acuity, potency, and response. A practitioner sets and adjusts the plan. Repeated self-dosing is discouraged as it can obscure the remedy's effect.
Safety & Precautions
- Pregnancy & breastfeeding: discuss with your physician and a qualified homeopath.
- Children: practitioner-led remedy selection.
- Existing conditions / medications: homeopathy is a distinct system of medicine; keep your physician informed and continue prescribed treatment as needed.
- Urgent care: sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, neurological symptoms, uncontrolled bleeding โ seek conventional medical care promptly.
Side Effects
- Homeopathic aggravation: a brief, temporary intensification may occur as the remedy acts; judged by the practitioner.
- Stop & consult if symptoms worsen persistently or new severe symptoms appear.
Who May Benefit?
Framed as symptom patterns, not diagnoses: a deep, fixed, syphilitic-type picture โ boring bone/long-bone pains worse at night, severe eye inflammation, "plug" sensations in throat or urethra, and coppery or destructive skin tendencies. Benefit is individual; a matching pattern โ not a disease label โ is what the practitioner assesses.
Who Should Avoid Self-Medicating?
Infants/young children, pregnant/breastfeeding women without guidance, anyone with sudden vision loss or severe eye pain, neurological symptoms, or persistent worsening. These require conventional medical assessment.
