What is Spigelia?
Origin and source. Spigelia is prepared from pinkroot (Spigelia anthelmia), a low plant with star-shaped red-and-yellow flowers, native to the Americas and traditionally used as a remedy for intestinal worms. The whole plant is the homeopathic starting material. In folk and early medicine it was valued for its strong action on the nervous system and on parasitic infestation, and in homeopathy the plant is taken through the standard process of serial dilution and succussion.
Preparation in homeopathy. As with all homeopathic remedies, the starting plant material is progressively diluted and succussed so that the final preparation is highly diluted. What remains is a remedy defined by its symptom picture in the materia medica rather than by any material quantity of the original plant.
Historical place in homeopathy. Spigelia is a classic remedy of violent, left-sided, throbbing pain โ above all the "sawing" or "hammering" pain over the heart and the terrible left-sided facial and eye neuralgias described by the older writers. It is grouped with the nerve- and heart-pain remedies and is distinguished by the way motion and lying on the left side aggravate the suffering while lying on the right may relieve it. In the materia medica spigelia is the remedy of the sensitive, pale, anxious person with a violently beating heart and a one-sided, pulsating agony. It remains a frequently discussed remedy for cardiac and facial neuralgic pictures within individualised practice.
Key Characteristics
- Violent throbbing / "sawing" pain โ a hammering, pulsating pain, classically over the heart and in the face/eyes.
- Left-sided predominance โ pains and palpitations are typically on the left side of the body.
- Cardiac oppression & palpitation โ a violent, irregular, oppressed beating with a sense of the heart pausing or struggling.
- Worse from motion and from lying on the left โ movement and the left-side posture aggravate; lying on the right may relieve.
- Nerve sensitivity โ a raw, oversensitive state of the nerves with starting and twitching.
- Pale, anxious face โ unlike the flushed aconite/belladonna types, spigelia shows a pale, distressed, anxious countenance.
- Worse in the open air, better lying on the right side โ traditional modalities that help confirm the match.
Traditional Symptom Picture
In homeopathic practice, spigelia is traditionally considered when a person's symptom pattern includes the themes above. The picture is built system by system:
Head
A violent, throbbing, left-sided headache or facial pain; the pain is often described as sawing or hammering and is worse from motion. The face is pale and anxious.
Eyes
Severe, left-sided eye pain that may shoot through to the back of the head; the eye is sensitive to light and the pain is worse from movement. This facial/eye neuralgia is a hallmark of the remedy.
Nose
Little characteristic; the facial pain may radiate across the cheek and brow.
Throat
A raw, sensitive, or constricted feeling; not a leading sphere.
Skin
No primary skin eruption; the remedy is nerve- and heart-centred.
Mind
Anxious, fearful, and sensitive; the person is distressed by the violent pain and the cardiac oppression. A pale, worried expression accompanies the physical suffering.
Heart / circulatory (leading sphere)
The central picture. Violent palpitation with a strong, irregular, and oppressed beating; a "sawing" or "hammering" sensation over the heart; a sense that the heart pauses or struggles. The pain and palpitation are left-sided and worse from motion and from lying on the left. Traditional literature centres spigelia on this cardiac neuralgia.
Digestive
Some nausea or a sensitive stomach may accompany the cardiac distress; otherwise not a leading sphere. The digestive unease is read as a reflex of the cardiac and nervous disturbance rather than as a primary gastrointestinal complaint, and the practitioner weighs it lightly against the dominant heart and nerve picture.
Urinary
Little characteristic; the overall sensitive state may be noted.
Extremities
Twitching and starting of the limbs; a raw nervous sensitivity.
Modalities
Better: lying on the right side, quiet, stillness. Worse: motion, lying on the left side, open air, jarring, the morning in some accounts.
Every symptom is read as part of an individual's complete picture. Two people with the same diagnosis may receive different remedies.
Conditions Where Practitioners May Consider Spigelia
The conditions below are ones where homeopathic practitioners traditionally discuss spigelia as one possible remedy among many, selected by the individual's complete symptom picture. Each links to its live condition overview and (where available) its in-depth guide.
Homeopathy individualises; responsible care includes medical diagnosis where indicated.
Common Patient Questions
- "I have a pounding, left-sided heart pain โ is spigelia the remedy?" โ A violent, left-sided, motion-worse cardiac pain is the classic spigelia picture, but only a qualified homeopath can confirm the match after full case-taking, and any chest pain must be evaluated by a physician.
- "Is this related to the worm remedy?" โ Spigelia's source plant was traditionally a vermifuge, but the homeopathic remedy is prepared by dilution and succussion and is used for its nerve- and heart-pain picture, not as a dewormer.
- "Why does lying on my left side hurt?" โ Left-side aggravation and right-side relief are traditional modalities of spigelia; this is exactly the kind of detail a homeopath records.
- "Can it help facial/eye neuralgia?" โ Left-sided, throbbing facial and eye pain is a hallmark of the remedy, but benefit is individual and assessed by the practitioner; neurological causes need evaluation.
Potencies
Homeopathic preparations use potency scales indicating dilution and succussion:
- 6C / 30C โ lower Centesimal potencies, traditionally for milder or more superficial patterns.
- 200C โ a higher potency, traditionally for deeper or constitutionally-matched cases.
- 1M โ a high potency used occasionally in individualised practice.
- LM โ a gentle, sequential potency format for sensitive individuals.
Potency is individualised โ chosen by the practitioner from your constitution and response. We do not advise self-selection of potency.
Dosage
Homeopathic dosage varies by individual: constitution, acuity, potency, and response. A practitioner sets and adjusts the plan. Repeated self-dosing is discouraged as it can obscure the remedy's effect.
Safety & Precautions
- Pregnancy & breastfeeding: discuss with your physician and a qualified homeopath.
- Children: practitioner-led remedy selection.
- Existing heart condition / medications: homeopathy is a distinct system of medicine; keep your physician informed and continue prescribed treatment as needed. Do not discontinue cardiac medication.
- Urgent care: chest pain, severe palpitation, fainting, or neurological deficit โ seek conventional medical care promptly.
Side Effects
- Homeopathic aggravation: a brief, temporary intensification may occur as the remedy acts; judged by the practitioner.
- Stop & consult if symptoms worsen persistently or new severe symptoms appear.
Who May Benefit?
Framed as symptom patterns, not diagnoses: a person with violent, throbbing, left-sided pain โ over the heart or in the face/eyes โ with palpitation, nerve sensitivity, a pale anxious face, and aggravation from motion and lying on the left. Benefit is individual; a matching pattern โ not a disease label โ is what the practitioner assesses.
Who Should Avoid Self-Medicating?
Anyone with diagnosed heart disease on medication, pregnant/breastfeeding women without guidance, infants/young children, people with chest pain, severe palpitation, fainting, or persistent worsening symptoms.
Spigelia vs Other Remedies

Crataegus is the gentle, tired, weak-heart picture without violent pain โ see crataegus for the contrast.
Spigelia vs Nux Vomica
Nux vomica is the irritable, overworked, digestive-and-nerve type rather than a heart-pain remedy โ see nux-vomica for the contrast.
