What is Robinia?
Origin and source. Robinia is prepared from the black locust tree (Robinia pseudacacia), a leguminous tree whose bark has a history of traditional use. In homeopathy the fresh bark is prepared and diluted according to pharmacopoeial method so the final preparation contains no material dose of the original plant.
Preparation in homeopathy. As with all homeopathic remedies, Robinia undergoes serial dilution and succussion. The final preparation is highly diluted; what remains is a remedy defined by its traditional symptom picture in the materia medica, not by any chemical residue.
Historical place in homeopathy. Robinia is a sharply-defined remedy in the digestive section of the materia medica, almost synonymous in the traditional literature with "sour dyspepsia." It is classically associated with burning, sour eructations and vomiting so acidic they excoriate, a gnawing burning in the stomach, and acidity that is markedly worse at night. In traditional homeopathic literature it is frequently compared with other acid/heartburn remedies but stands out for the intensity and sourness of the acidity. The traditional picture also includes relatively little thirst โ distinguishing it from many other burning, acidic remedies. It is chosen by the whole pattern, never by disease name alone, and always individualised by a qualified homeopath.
Key Characteristics
- Intensely sour belching and vomiting โ eructations and vomit that are sharply, almost corrosive, sour; a hallmark Robinia keynote.
- Burning, acid stomach โ a gnawing, hot burning in the epigastrium with sour heartburn.
- Sourness throughout the picture โ sour taste, sour breath, sour everything; a distinctive traditional feature.
- Worse at night โ acidity and burning flare after lying down and through the night.
- Waterbrash / acrid throat irritation โ the sour reflux irritates and burns the throat.
- No great thirst โ unlike many burning remedies, the Robinia type is not especially thirsty.
- Better sitting up, cold food/drink; worse lying down, at night, after eating, rich food.
Traditional Symptom Picture
In homeopathic practice, Robinia is traditionally considered when a person's symptom pattern includes the themes above. The picture is built system by system:
Head
A heavy, dull head with the sour dyspepsia; the person may feel generally bilious and foggy in the traditional picture.
Eyes
Less prominent; a traditional consideration in the associated bilious state.
Nose
Occasional acrid nasal irritation from the general acidity in the broader picture.
Throat
A burning, sour irritation of the throat from acidic reflux; the sourness seems to rise and scald. A traditional confirmatory feature of the remedy.
Digestive / abdomen
The leading sphere. Intensely sour belching and vomiting, a burning gnawing in the stomach, and waterbrash. The acidity is worse at night and on lying down. Stools may be sour-smelling. This is a traditional digestive picture requiring medical assessment where persistent or severe.
Mind
The mental picture is one of irritability from the burning acidity โ the person is restless, discontented, and sharp-tempered during flares. This is a traditional constitutional sketch used in individualised case-taking, never a label applied to a disease.
Constitution & temperament
The Robinia constitution is traditionally "the sour-acid" type โ prone to burning, sour dyspepsia that dominates the case and is worse at night. There is a bilious, acidic quality to the whole digestion with relatively little thirst.
Liver
A traditional consideration in sluggish, bilious, acid-forming patterns within the individualised picture, linked to the sour dyspepsia.
Extremities
Burning in the palms and soles during the acid flare; a generally heated peripheral sensation in the traditional picture.
Modalities
Better: sitting erect, cold food and drink, fresh air. Worse: lying down, night, after eating, rich or fatty food, warm rooms.
Every symptom is read as part of an individual's complete picture. Two people with the same diagnosis may receive different remedies.
Conditions Where Practitioners May Consider Robinia
The conditions below are ones where homeopathic practitioners traditionally discuss Robinia as one possible remedy among many, selected by the individual's complete symptom picture. Each links to its live condition overview and (where available) its in-depth guide.
Homeopathy individualises; responsible care includes medical diagnosis where indicated.
Common Patient Questions
- "My burps are so sour they burn โ is this Robinia?" โ only a qualified homeopath can tell after individualised case-taking; intensely sour, burning eructations are a traditional keynote but must be confirmed by the whole picture.
- "Why is it worse at night?" โ acidity and burning that flare at night and on lying down is a traditional feature of the Robinia picture.
- "Is it for heartburn specifically?" โ practitioners may consider it where sour, burning heartburn forms part of a broader matching pattern.
- "Do I need to avoid certain foods?" โ homeopathy individualises; the remedy is matched to the whole person, and your homeopath will advise on triggers alongside your physician.
Potencies
Homeopathic preparations use potency scales indicating dilution and succussion:
- 6C / 30C โ lower Centesimal potencies, traditionally for milder or more superficial patterns.
- 200C โ a higher potency, traditionally for deeper or constitutionally-matched cases.
- 1M โ a high potency used occasionally in individualised practice.
- LM โ a gentle, sequential potency format for sensitive individuals.
Potency is individualised โ chosen by the practitioner from your constitution and response. We do not advise self-selection of potency.
Dosage
Homeopathic dosage varies by individual: constitution, acuity, potency, and response. A practitioner sets and adjusts the plan. Repeated self-dosing is discouraged as it can obscure the remedy's effect.
Safety & Precautions
- Pregnancy & breastfeeding: discuss with your physician and a qualified homeopath.
- Children: practitioner-led remedy selection.
- Existing conditions / medications: homeopathy is a distinct system of medicine; keep your physician informed and continue prescribed treatment as needed.
- Urgent care: severe persistent vomiting, blood in vomit or stool, difficulty swallowing, unintentional weight loss, or chest pain โ seek conventional medical care promptly.
Side Effects
- Homeopathic aggravation: a brief, temporary intensification may occur as the remedy acts; judged by the practitioner.
- Stop & consult if symptoms worsen persistently or new severe symptoms appear.
Who May Benefit?
Framed as symptom patterns, not diagnoses: a digestive picture dominated by intensely sour, burning belching and vomiting, a gnawing acid stomach, sourness throughout, and night-worse acidity with relatively little thirst. Benefit is individual; a matching pattern โ not a disease label โ is what the practitioner assesses.
Who Should Avoid Self-Medicating?
Infants/young children, pregnant/breastfeeding women without guidance, anyone with blood in vomit/stool, difficulty swallowing, unintentional weight loss, severe persistent vomiting, chest pain, or persistent worsening symptoms.
