What is Psorinum?
Origin and source. Psorinum is a nosode โ a remedy prepared in homeopathy from the pathological product of the scabies (Psora) mite lesion. In the classical Hahnemannian framework it represents the "psoric miasm," considered the deepest and most widespread chronic miasm underlying many long-standing conditions. The source material is processed and carried through serial dilution and succussion.
Preparation in homeopathy. As with all homeopathic remedies, psorinum undergoes serial dilution and succussion. The final preparation is highly diluted; what remains is a remedy characterised by its constitutional profile in the materia medica, not by any material residue of the source.
Historical place in homeopathy. Psorinum is a principal antipsoric nosode in the "miasmatic" tradition of Hahnemann, Boenninghausen, and Kent. It is used as a deep intercurrent where the constitution appears fundamentally deranged โ the cachectic, offensive, icy-cold, "never-well-since" person who relapses repeatedly. It is a frequent compare of sulphur (the mineral antipsoric), tuberculinum (the restless, consumptive miasm), and syphilinum (the destructive miasm).
Key Characteristics
- Offensive body odour โ a striking, disagreeable smell from the skin, sweat, and discharges; "never gets clean."
- Extreme coldness โ the person is icy, wants to be covered, worse in cold air, better in warmth/summer.
- Cachexia / "never-well-since" โ a deep, wasted, debilitated, chronically-unwell constitution.
- Skin worse in winter, better in summer โ eruptions and itching intensify in cold and improve with heat.
- Great debility and weakness โ disproportionate exhaustion; walks bent, cannot stand upright.
- Craves fresh air yet is chilly โ a contradictory, restless state; insomnia from coldness.
- Worse in winter, cold, at night, from washing; better in summer, warmth, from sweating.
Traditional Symptom Picture
In homeopathic practice, psorinum is traditionally considered when a person's symptom pattern includes the themes above. The picture is built system by system:
Head
A heavy, dull head with the cachectic state; offensive scalp and dandruff; the person feels deeply unwell "since long ago."
Eyes
Less prominent; a traditional consideration in the chronic, weakened eye state.
Nose
Offensive catarrh; loss of smell; a traditional consideration in chronic nasal states.
Throat
Offensive breath; a traditional consideration in the chronic throat picture.
Skin
The leading sphere. Chronic, offensive, itchy eruptions โ psoriasis-, eczema-, and acne-type states โ worse in winter and better in summer; the skin never seems clean. Offensive sweat.
Mind
A discouraged, despondent, "given-up" state โ the person feels fundamentally broken and relapses repeatedly. There is deep fatigue of spirit, a conviction that nothing will ever set them right, and a withdrawal from effort. Small hopes are abandoned; the person expects to relapse because they always have. In the older descriptions this is the "psoric despair" โ not acute sadness but a chronic, constitutional hopelessness. This is a traditional constitutional sketch, never a label applied to a disease.
Constitution & temperament
The psorinum constitution is the cachectic, offensive, ice-cold, never-well-since type โ wasted, debilitated, relapsing, worse in winter. These are people who have "never been right" since a long-past illness or suppression, who are cold to the bone yet crave air, and who carry an offensive odour that washing does not remove. It contrasts with the hot, restless sulphur type (who is not cachectic) and with the restless, consumptive tuberculinum type (who is not offensive). The remedy is read as part of the whole person, not as a disease treatment. Because the picture can overlap malnutrition, infection, or chronic disease, conventional assessment supports any homeopathic consideration.
Urinary
Offensive urine; a traditional consideration in the chronic, foul urinary state within the individualised picture.
Digestive
Great weakness with the digestive state; craving for stimulants; offensive flatus and stools. A deep, sluggish, "never-right" digestion.
Liver
Sluggish, congested picture with offensiveness; a traditional consideration in hepatic torpor within the individualised picture.
Extremities
Cold, weak limbs; the person walks bent and cannot stand erect from debility; offensive foot sweat.
Modalities
Better: summer, warmth, sweating, covers. Worse: winter, cold air, night, washing, fasting.
Every symptom is read as part of an individual's complete picture. Two people with the same diagnosis may receive different remedies.
Conditions Where Practitioners May Consider Psorinum
The conditions below are ones where homeopathic practitioners traditionally discuss psorinum as one possible remedy among many, selected by the individual's complete symptom picture. Each links to its live condition overview and (where available) its in-depth guide.
Homeopathy individualises; responsible care includes medical diagnosis where indicated.
Common Patient Questions
- "I'm always cold, offensive, and never feel well โ could this be psorinum?" โ the coldness-with-offensiveness and "never-well-since" combination is a classical feature, but only a qualified homeopath can confirm the full pattern after individualised case-taking.
- "Why are my skin problems worse in winter?" โ the winter-worse, summer-better modality is a traditional keynote for this remedy; it is exactly what a homeopath assesses.
- "Is a nosode the same as a vaccine?" โ no; a homeopathic nosode is a specifically prepared, highly diluted remedy in the homeopathic pharmacopoeia, not an immunisation. Discuss vaccinations with your physician.
- "How do I know the potency?" โ potency is individualised by the practitioner, not chosen from a fixed chart.
Potencies
Homeopathic preparations use potency scales indicating dilution and succussion:
- 30C โ a moderate Centesimal potency, traditionally used for the psoric intercurrent.
- 200C โ a higher potency, traditionally for deeper or constitutionally-matched cases.
- 1M โ a high potency used occasionally in individualised practice.
- LM โ a gentle, sequential potency format for sensitive individuals.
Potency is individualised โ chosen by the practitioner from your constitution and response. We do not advise self-selection of potency.
Dosage
Homeopathic dosage varies by individual: constitution, acuity, potency, and response. A practitioner sets and adjusts the plan. Repeated self-dosing is discouraged as it can obscure the remedy's effect; nosodes in particular are practitioner-supervised.
Safety & Precautions
- Pregnancy & breastfeeding: discuss with your physician and a qualified homeopath.
- Children: practitioner-led remedy selection.
- Existing conditions / medications: homeopathy is a distinct system of medicine; keep your physician informed and continue prescribed treatment as needed.
- Urgent care: severe infection, high fever, chest pain, neurological symptoms โ seek conventional medical care promptly.
Side Effects
- Homeopathic aggravation: a brief, temporary intensification may occur as the remedy acts; judged by the practitioner.
- Stop & consult if symptoms worsen persistently or new severe symptoms appear.
Who May Benefit?
Framed as symptom patterns, not diagnoses: a cachectic, offensive, ice-cold, "never-well-since" constitution with chronic skin worse in winter, great debility, and a despondent, relapse-prone state. Benefit is individual; a matching pattern โ not a disease label โ is what the practitioner assesses.
Who Should Avoid Self-Medicating?
Infants/young children, pregnant/breastfeeding women without guidance, active infections needing conventional care, high fever, chest pain, neurological symptoms, severe immune-compromise, persistent worsening symptoms.
Psorinum vs Other Remedies
Comparison tables show why remedy choice is individualised โ pattern contrasts, not rankings.
Psorinum vs Sulphur
Sulphur is hot, restless, itchy-but-unwashed, not cachectic โ see sulphur for the contrast.
Psorinum vs Tuberculinum
Tuberculinum is restless, consumptive, better from travel, less offensive โ see tuberculinum for the distinction.
Psorinum vs Syphilinum
Syphilinum is destructive, with bone/pain and a "worse at night" quality โ see syphilinum for the contrast.
