What is Colocynth?
Origin and source. Colocynth is prepared from the peeled and dried pulp of the fruit of Citrullus colocynthis, a trailing vine of the gourd family native to the Mediterranean and arid regions of Asia and Africa. The fresh pulp is intensely bitter and, in crude form, a drastic cathartic; in homeopathy the substance is systematically diluted and succussed so that the final preparation is defined by its traditional symptom picture rather than by any material dose of the original drug.
Preparation in homeopathy. As with all homeopathic remedies, colocynth undergoes serial dilution and succussion according to pharmacopoeial method.
